Contemporary Violin Makers, published by Jost Thöne

Contemporary Violin Makers, published by Jost Thöne

In 2005 I started the “Violin Expo” project with the aim of taking a closer look at international contemporary violin making. For many years I had visited violin makers in Europe and looked closely at their work and tried it out. I then set up a permanent sales exhibition in my shop that showed selected instruments from various violin makers. In order to make these instruments accessible to a wider audience, I decided to portray 80 of these instruments/violin makers and publish them in two volumes. Musicians have the opportunity to get an idea of the violin maker and his instruments before visiting Munich, Cremona or Paris. Of course, the tonal qualities can still only be experienced live. The great interest in this publication as well as the increasing demand for very good new instruments encouraged me to delve deeper into this subject. Today, however, I have essentially reduced the pool of instruments to a core of those violin makers who have parameters such as small editions, a high level of sound and impressive artistic significance (only my own models with full varnish and no antiques) and a proven, interesting increase in value. I will write more about these instruments later. The violin makers shown are provided with portraits by Jan Röhrmann, who also took the photos of the instruments. The individual violin makers in the CVM books are listed in detail here:
